How to Clean the iPhone Charging Port
These days, charging your iPhone can feel as automatic as breathing. However, if your phone isn't charging when it's plugged in, there might be a culprit: a dirty charging port. It is common for iPhone ports to get dirty over time. Today, PHONEFIX will share how to clean the charging port.
Troubleshoot cable issues
If you're trying to plug in a Lightning cable and the connection doesn't seem to be stable, the problem might be the cable itself or the Lightning port on your iPhone. If replacing the cable with a new one fixes the problem, then your old cable is bad or dirty. Use a pencil eraser to rub the flat contacts on the old Lightning cable to remove dirt and goo and try again. If that doesn't work, you will need to buy a new charging cable.
If a new cable doesn't fix the problem, your iPhone's charging port may be dirty or faulty.
How to clean
To safely clean your iPhone's Lightning port and avoid accidental short circuits that could damage your phone, be sure to power off the device first. How you do this depends on the type of iPhone you have:
• On iPhones without a home button: Press and hold the side button and the volume up or down button for about four seconds until the power off slider appears.
• On an iPhone with a home button and side button: Press and hold the side button for a few seconds until the shutdown slider appears on the screen.
• On iPhones with a home button and top button: Press and hold the top button until the shutdown slider appears.
Use a professional cleaning kit
First, gently insert a toothpick into the Lightning port on the bottom of your iPhone. Move it back and forth and try to scoop out lint or dust. When moving the toothpick, try to keep it in the center of the port (between the front and back of the iPhone) to avoid damaging the pins on the bottom of the connector (towards the back of the phone). Make sure not to apply too much force to the toothpick. If you're too rough, the pieces of the toothpick may snap off, which can cause more trouble than the fluff you're trying to remove.
When you're done, gently wipe off the fluff and turn on your iPhone by pressing and holding the top or side button until you see the Apple logo in the center of the screen. Try plugging in a known working Lightning cable to see if you get a solid connection. If it still doesn't work, you may need to turn off the iPhone and clean the ports again. However, if all is well, you are good to go!
If you've cleaned your iPhone's charging port and it's still not working, you may need to contact Apple Service for assistance. They can repair or replace your iPhone for a fee. Meanwhile, if you're in a pinch and need to charge your iPhone, you can use Magsafe.
